Bio
I’ve been a photojournalist for over a decade. My career path has focused primarily in the fields of picture editing and photo department management. Currently, I’m the director of photography for the mid-sized daily newspaper The Free Lance-Star which covers the city of Fredericksburg, VA area and seven surrounding counties.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, I co-founded Operation Photo Rescue (OPR) with then FLS staff photographer Rebecca Sell. OPR is a volunteer network of professional photojournalists and amateur digital photographers, graphic designers, image restoration artists and others. OPR’s mission is to repair photographs damaged by unforeseen circumstances such as house fires and natural disasters at no cost to the people who own them. OPR is still going strong five years later and its volunteers have restored thousands of damaged images.
I am also one of the directors of Truth With A Camera. Truth is a series of photojournalism workshops in which photographers from around the world travel to distant lands to document the works of NGO’s and non-profits. The workshops are kindling for the fire in my photojournalistic soul and have allowed me to travel to places I may never have otherwise. So far, I have traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico and Quito, Ecuador through the workshop. In May of 2011, I’ll be headed to Bosnia.
Prior to embarking on my current career, I served in the US Army as a helicopter crewchief. I served combat duty during the Gulf War and spent time in Kuwait, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
And if all of that doesn’t keep me busy enough, I have my wife, Angela, my two boys, Jack and Shane, and our dog, Skye, to fill in the quiet moments.
